"sanjay gupta, md" starts right now. >> hello and thanks for being with us. as you may know, i spent the past week immersed in what might be the most upsetting story i think i've ever reported. i want to start by saying, the kind of horrible violence we saw in newtown, connecticut, it isn't new. in fact, the worst school attack ever took place more than 80 years ago in bath, michigan. there was a consolidated school, the pride and joy of that community. it also meant increased property taxes and a farmer became angry about that. so for weeks he put dynamite under the local school and then eventually blew it up. 38 children died. and then he killed himself with another load of dynamite. we'll never truly know for sure why he did all that or what made the young man in newtown unload a rifle into a classroom full of first graders. but i've looked at other school shootings and they

in newtown, connecticut, it isn't new. the worst school attack took place more than 80 years ago in michigan. there was this new school, baath consolidated school which was the pride and joy of that community. this farmer, he became angry about that. so, get this, for weeks he put dynamite under the local school and then eventually blew it up. 38 children died. and then he killed himself with another load of dynamite. we'll never truly know for sure why he did all that ask or what made the young man in newtown unload a rifle into a classroom full of first graders. i looked at other school shootings and they might just provide some clues. first thing you notice when you look around newtown, everyone has that questioning look. why? what did we miss? to try to make some sense in newtown, connecticut, look for evidence of patterns. not talking about looking at clothing styles or musical preperances or lifestyle, but rather looking for evidence of specific plans. could give some clues to what was happening in a person's mind and in their brain. it's hard to know because relatively few tragedies l

not officially identified him here in newtown, connecticut. but i guess i'm trying to understand. is there -- does he have a mental illness, and is this something that could be -- people could know about and not -- and he could have been struggling to get treatment? >> let's first get to your first point, which is in autism, between 25 and 50% of individuals can have aggressive or violent behaviors. but in those situations, it's almost always reactive. either something hurts them or they do something impulsively or because they get upset about something or anxious or moods are not right. it's reactive, on the time at that spot. but we're talking about a situation here where something was preplanned. was deliberately thought out. drove a distance to do it. and basically targeted individuals who were clearly nowhere involved with anything that's going on. that's a different type of aggression. that's not reactive aggression. that's more like preplanned aggression that's present. that's what we may see in individuals with mental illness. and in individuals with mental illness, you d

. welcome back to cnn's continuing coverage of the tragedy at sandy hook, elementary. we are here in newtown, connecticut. heading towards the bottom of the hour. i'm kate bolduan and john berman will be back to join me in a couple of minutes. let's catch you up on what we know this sunday. president obama will head to newtown, connecticut, where he will meet with the families of the victims. the president will also speak at a vigil, an interfaith vigil tonight. many people looking forward to hearing his words. we also know 12 of the victims were boys and 8 were girls. the medical examiner released the names of all of the victims yesterday. all of the children were either 6 or 7 years old. while 6 of them have the victi adults, all were women working at the school. united way set up a fund to collect donations for victims' families and the community as a whole. it's called the sandy hook school support fund. all donations will go directly to those affected. many ways to impact your world today. >>> we still don't know much, though, about the shooter, adam lanza. so many questions and very f
